Tamikrest

Tamikrest are one of the most important bands in modern Saharan rock. Founded in 2006 in Tinzawaten on the border between Algeria and Mali, they combine the musical tradition of the Tuareg with the raw power of rock—driven by a clear political consciousness.

Inspired by Tinariwen's legacy and driven by the desire to give voice to the oppressed Kel Tamasheq people, the band quickly gained international attention. Their first albums, Adagh (2010) and Toumastin (2011), impressed listeners with their haunting melodies and powerful songwriting. With Chatma (2013), a powerful work about the struggles of women in the Sahara, Tamikrest established themselves as a central figure in the Ishumar genre. The album was awarded the Songlines Award for "Best Album of the Year."

With Kidal (2017) and Tamotaït (2020), the band deepened its roots in the Tamasheq tradition without sacrificing the energy and urgency of rock. Tamikrest really comes into its own live: psychedelic desert rock, hypnotic trance, and rousing rhythms merge into an intense concert experience.

After extensive tours through Europe, Africa, North and South America, Japan, South Korea, and Australia, Tamikrest are now coming to Basel for the second time – for a special evening at the Gannet.
